Benefits of radiosurgery

A Technology Offering Multiple Benefits for Patients

  • Enhanced precision
    The operating principle of the ZAP-X® is the intersection of micro–X-ray beams generated by a miniaturized linear accelerator, enabling precise targeting of any intracranial lesion and the cervical spinal cord. The system’s technical design allows the delivery of very high doses with great accuracy while minimizing the risk of damage to surrounding healthy tissue (notably by reducing scattered radiation around the target). Compared with other radiotherapy methods, ZAP-X® stands out for its ability to perform fast treatments and to treat tumors or other lesions that are hard to access or not easily operable, with acceptable safety margins.

  • Faster treatment
    The ZAP-X® system reduces treatment time compared with traditional techniques—both per session and across the overall treatment course.

  • Enhanced comfort
    To ensure correct head positioning during treatment, preparation involves fitting a thermoplastic, custom-molded mask, which requires neither hospitalization nor anesthesia. The entire process—from preparation to treatment—is completely painless for the patient. The short duration of each session and the limited number of sessions (between 1 and 5) make the treatment much more comfortable for patients.

  • Treatment of hard-to-reach tumors
    Thanks to its ability to deliver highly localized, precisely targeted doses, ZAP-X® can treat tumors located in complex or hard-to-reach anatomical areas—something that is not always possible with other radiotherapy methods. This is particularly important for certain regions involved in vision and hearing, which are especially sensitive to radiation.

  • Adaptability to different types of lesions
    ZAP-X® is particularly suited to the treatment of:
    • Benign intracranial tumors (mainly meningiomas and schwannomas) and malignant tumors (primarily brain metastases, but also skull-base chordomas);
    • Cerebral vascular anomalies (primarily arteriovenous malformations and cavernomas);
    • Functional disorders (certain types of trigeminal neuralgia and cluster headache, specific forms of epilepsy, and some movement disorders).

  • Fewer side effects
    Owing to its high precision, ZAP-X® helps minimize the risk of side effects to the healthy tissues and organs adjacent to the treated lesion.
  • Optimized treatment planning
    With ZAP-X®, planning and control systems enable better dose management, with fine adjustments that limit the impact on healthy tissue.

  • Less invasive treatment
    As a non-invasive technology, ZAP-X® can avoid surgery in a number of cases—an important advantage for patients who are not candidates for an operation due to tumor location or overall health status. Radiosurgery may also be offered in addition to surgery when a fragment of tumor or lesion is deliberately left in place because of operative neurological risk. Overall, whether used alongside or instead of surgery, ZAP-X® radiosurgery can substantially reduce risk.
